What makes this coffee special

Vila Boa combines an accessible, sweet cup with a project built around women, conservation and reducing the impact of transport.

Women & local impact

The farm is led by Monica Borges de Sousa and the coffee takes part in the Women Coffee programme. It supports a local organisation that helps women develop economic activities and runs educational and cultural initiatives for neighbouring communities (ICAFE).

Farm & environment

A significant part of the estate is dedicated to conservation. The coffee is associated with Café de Forêt® and the farm is pursuing a carbon-neutrality approach. It regularly monitors soil health and progressively renews its coffee trees.

Transport by sail

This lot is shipped to Europe by sail. This choice extends the environmental approach taken at the farm into the logistics of bringing the coffee to Europe.

Origin & producers

Carmo da Mata · Sul de Minas · Minas Gerais · Brazil

Fazenda Vila Boa was founded in 1988 when Monica Borges de Sousa inherited 90 hectares of farmland from her father. Trained as a psychologist, she became a coffee producer and developed the estate with her husband.

The couple began by planting seven hectares of coffee. Monica chose the name “Vila Boa”, which can be translated as “pleasant town”, to express her wish to bring together people who shared the same vision of agricultural work.

From fruit to coffee

Red Bourbon · Natural · Mechanical harvest · 10 to 15 days drying on patios

For this lot, mechanical harvesting is a pragmatic choice: it helps keep a highly committed coffee accessible in price. Quality control then shifts to sorting: the cherries are harvested ripe and selected at the mill to remove underripe or overripe fruit, before drying whole in the sun on patios for 10 to 15 days.
